Volcanic Whips a Vintage Shafer

Pull out all the stops, it's the holiday time. We were searching for a good opener for our centerpiece - a 1992 Hillside Select by Shafer. Diamond Creek's Volcanic Hill - 2003 Vintage got the nod and opened things up quick, tight and full of hickory smoked, blackberry, pungent flavor. The problem was that besides the 92's terrific nose and amazingly inky color, the Volcanic Hill blew the Shafer out of the water. As with any bottle that old, it is certainly possible that it just lost its socks before we were able to uncork it. All in all - it is a good night indeed, when your wine 'problem' is that the young gun out slugs the 400 ton gorilla. Look for that 2003 Diamond Creek in a few years when it softens up a little. Going to be a huge huge win for Diamond Creek.
